A small pit-stop town, Shendi is an unremarkable Nile-side habitation only frequented by tourists because of its proximity to the famous pyramids of Meröe. Even then few stay here as the incredible archaeological site can be visited easily from Khartoum in a day.
Life in the town centres around the to and fro of people and goods as they refill or stock up at this busy interchange. The market is a hub-bub of business, fresh produce comes from nearby allotments on the river, whilst others trade in manufactured essentials and raw materials. Tea-ladies, as always, are everywhere, offering refreshment in between bouts of haggling.
