Cairo to Khartoum
The seeds of this adventure began whilst planning a 30th birthday present to ourselves. When unfolding the map we realised we could travel up the oldest river in the world, alongside ancient wonders and into Sub-Saharan Africa, finally making our return after six years since Rising Shoots.
Tracing the Nile from Cairo to Khartoum is a route that winds its way through centuries of civilisation. Following in a millennia of footsteps the murky water accompanied us from chaotic, modern Cairo, past epic monuments, thick groves of date palms and hostile desert to dusty Khartoum where the Blue and White Niles meet.
In Egypt, childhood imaginations came to life and on Cairo’s modern streets we discovered roasted pigeon stuffed with fragrant rice. Sudan dumbfounded us with the unbelievable warmth of its people and its incredible, little-known archaeological richness. In both countries tea forms the heart of social life and we partook heartily in this custom, nearly drowning in the hospitality of the many people we met along the way.
